Some Samsung Galaxy owners report that Android Auto stutters, drops out or refuses to connect after updating to One UI 9, the Android 17-based release now rolling out more widely. Neither Samsung nor Google has published a confirmed cause or a fix, so this guide is about narrowing the problem down, not promising a cure.
What is actually confirmed
9to5Google says reports have appeared on Reddit, Samsung’s forums and Google’s forums, with a clear pattern but not a massively widespread problem as far as it can tell. Affected users describe stuttering performance, a connection that fails entirely, or both. Android Authority adds that the reports span several Galaxy models and that Google replied in a Galaxy A55 thread to say the Android Auto team had received the report and passed it on internally.
The one semi-controlled data point is a single user test: a Galaxy S25 Edge on One UI 8.5 connected fine, while a Galaxy S24 Ultra updated to One UI 9 reproduced the problem. It is anecdotal, but it points at the phone update rather than the car. Android Authority also notes that Galaxy A55 users complained about wireless disconnections long before One UI 9, so some of these cases may be an older problem resurfacing. Some users also say Android Auto keeps working normally after the update.
What to check, in order
These steps come from the general setup requirements in Google’s Android Auto Help, plus common-sense isolation. They are not a verified fix for One UI 9, and one Galaxy S26 owner reported that re-pairing, clearing app data and switching to a wired connection did not help.
- Confirm the basics. Google asks for a compatible car, a phone that meets the minimum requirements for USB or wireless, and mobile data coverage during setup. For wireless, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location on while setting up.
- Test USB and wireless separately. If wired works and wireless drops, you have a much narrower problem than a total failure. Try a different, good-quality data cable and a different USB port in the car.
- Update Android Auto and Google Play services. Android Auto is built into recent phones, so check Play Store updates for the related Google apps rather than looking for a separate download.
- Restart both sides. Reboot the phone and the car’s head unit, then reconnect with the car parked.
- Remove and re-add the car. Forget the car in Android Auto settings and Bluetooth, then pair again. It costs a few minutes and rules out a stale pairing.
- Clear Android Auto app data and cache. Do this only if the previous steps fail, since you will have to redo your Android Auto preferences.
- Isolate the phone. If you have a second phone, or a friend with a Galaxy on One UI 8.5, try it in the same car. A different phone working in your car points to the update on your handset.
What changes for you
If you depend on Android Auto every day, there is a practical decision here: if your Galaxy has not received One UI 9 yet and your connection is stable, there is no urgent reason to rush the update while the reports are open. If you already updated and the connection is unreliable, document what you tried and report it to Google through the Android Auto Help Community and to Samsung, including the phone model, One UI version, car make and model, and whether the issue is wired or wireless. Specific, comparable reports are what move a bug like this forward.

In brief
- Reports of Android Auto stutter and connection failures after One UI 9 come from several Galaxy models.
- Google has acknowledged a report but no cause or fix has been announced.
- Test wired and wireless separately, update Google apps, restart, re-pair, and clear app data last.
- One user found re-pairing, clearing data and a cable did not help, so a fix may need a Samsung or Google update.
- Report your exact phone, car and connection type to help the investigation.
