EdgeSnap 0.4 beta makes window snapping more flexible on AmigaOS 4, MorphOS and AROS x86_64. In addition to edges and corners, users can now place a window in the middle of the screen or choose from a nine-cell selector. The release also updates edgesnap.library to version 2.17.
The interesting part is not simply bringing a macOS- or Windows-style convenience to the Amiga. EdgeSnap is being built as reusable window-management infrastructure that respects each system’s native APIs. The commodity remains useful on its own, while more of the underlying logic moves into a shared library.
New zones and keyboard shortcuts
Press Ctrl + Alt + C to move the active window to the centre while keeping its current size. Ctrl + Alt + Z opens a selector beneath the pointer with nine zones: the centre, sides and corners. Choose a cell with the mouse or cursor keys. This gives users a direct alternative to dragging a window to an edge when the pointer is elsewhere or a specific placement is needed.
Windows now glide into their selected zone rather than jumping there. Repeating the same side hotkey cycles through half, two-thirds and one-third screen widths. Both behaviours can be disabled in preferences, whether you prefer an instant move or one predictable width.
A less intrusive divider and a more capable library
The handle between two snapped windows has been fixed so it no longer leaves marks when covered or intercepts clicks intended for the overlapping window. It is a small detail, but on a composited desktop, graphical leftovers can make an otherwise sound feature feel unreliable.
For developers, edgesnap.library 2.17 adds distinct client roles, work areas with identities that survive a screen-mode change, and layout groups that help coordinate windows managed by different programs. This is not official adoption by either operating system: it is an evolving public API intended to give future tiling managers a shared engine instead of making each one duplicate the same logic.
Compatibility, testing and installation
The release provides two archives: EdgeSnap-0.4.lha for AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS, and EdgeSnap-0.4-AROS64.lha for AROS x86_64 ABIv11. The project reports testing on real MorphOS hardware and under emulation on AmigaOS 4.1 and AROS One 1.3, installing over an earlier version each time. These are useful checks, but they are not certification across every configuration or graphics driver. EdgeSnap remains beta software, and user reports still matter.
To update, extract the archive and run the Install icon. The installer stops and replaces the running copy without requiring a reboot. Before upgrading, it is still sensible to keep a copy of your preferences and confirm that you downloaded the archive for the right system.
