Nothing OS 5.0 is the company’s Android 17 release, but the useful date for owners is not the headline date. The Open Beta starts with the Nothing Phone (3) on 26 August at 11:00 BST; the stable rollout is currently planned to begin in mid-October. That gap is where a sensible update decision lives: beta software is for testing, not a shortcut to a finished phone.
Nothing’s official announcement describes a wide system refresh rather than a single flagship feature: a new Geist system typeface, revised Settings, Camera and Gallery interfaces, new lock-screen options, a dedicated Glyph app, faster Bluetooth controls and changes to Essential Space and Essential Apps. It also brings Android 17 features such as optional split Notifications and Quick Settings panels, revised location prompts, expanded dark-theme controls and a separate assistant volume setting.
What arrives first, and what does not
The first Open Beta is for Phone (3). Nothing says more eligible models will be added over the following months, while the general release is due to start from October. Some of the headline visual changes are explicitly not in the first beta: the redesigned Launcher and the Micrographics clock face remain in development and are slated for the general release.
That distinction matters. A feature shown in a launch post is not automatically a feature present in the build you install. Before joining, check the build-specific changelog and the download page rather than assuming every screenshot or demo has shipped.
The practical case for waiting
The Open Beta is appropriate if you have a secondary device, can tolerate regressions, and are willing to send useful bug reports. It is a poor trade for a phone that handles payment apps, work authentication, travel documents or a critical daily workflow. The new interface is interesting; discovering a broken banking app on a Monday morning is less so.
Nothing also flags that its timetable may change as testing progresses. Independent coverage currently places the Phone (3) stable release in mid-October, with later windows for other supported devices. Treat those dates as a roadmap, not an appointment written into the firmware.
Three checks before installing the beta
- Confirm the exact model and region. “Nothing Phone” is not a compatibility list. Use Nothing’s beta page and verify your precise device before downloading anything.
- Make a recoverable backup. Sync the data that matters, verify that the backup actually completed, and keep any recovery codes for your authenticator and accounts outside the phone.
- Read the exit path. Know whether leaving the beta requires a reset or a wait for the next stable build. Do not assume a rollback is painless because an update screen makes it look tidy.
What changes for everyday use
The useful improvements are the unglamorous ones: Gallery sorting and album organisation, QR results that stay fixed on screen, batch home-screen editing, a clearer home for Glyph controls and quicker Bluetooth actions. Nothing is also adding an Away Time widget that shows time spent away from the phone, rather than trying to enforce a hard limit.
The company is expanding Essential Space with smarter collections and preparing read-only access for compatible AI tools later in the year. That can reduce friction when saved notes are genuinely useful, but it is another reason to review which captures you keep and which integrations you enable. New convenience is still a setting worth reading before tapping through.
What AndroidLab thinks
Nothing OS 5.0 looks more substantial than the usual cosmetic point update, but its rollout is sensibly staged. Phone (3) owners who enjoy testing can learn a lot from the beta; everyone else should wait for the stable build and the first wave of real-world reports. The only bad update strategy is confusing a launch calendar with a guarantee.
