Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 on Pixel: eligibility, fixed bugs and the no-wipe exit rule

Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 is not an update to install just because a newer build number appears in Settings. For Pixel owners already in Google’s testing channel who have one of the bugs it targets, though, it is worth assessing methodically. Google lists build CP41.260701.005 and fixes for Bluetooth reconnection after a remote bond loss, a Gemini-triggered reboot, lock-screen media glitches, and touch input after a multi-finger drag-and-drop gesture. The useful order is not glamorous: identify the symptom, verify compatibility, then consider the OTA.

What changed, and who can install it

QPR2 is the branch Google is testing for the December 2026 Pixel Feature Drop. This first beta is chiefly a stability release, not a bag of keynote features. It is available for Pixel 6a and newer, including the Pixel 7, 8, 9 and 10 families, Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet, through the Android Beta Program or the Android Emulator. Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are excluded: QPR1 is their final beta branch, so an absent QPR2 download on those phones is not an update failure.

The two practical fixes are narrow but useful. One addresses Bluetooth devices that fail to reconnect after the pairing bond is lost, without making the failure obvious. Another fixes a system crash that can restart a Pixel when Gemini is launched. Neither claim means that every unreliable headset, car connection or assistant interaction is now solved. If the actual problem is broad battery drain, unstable mobile data or an unrelated app crash, installing a preview because “Bluetooth is mentioned” is a very efficient way to muddy the diagnosis.

Pre-install checklist

  1. Match the bug first. For Bluetooth, note the accessory, when the disconnect happens and whether it follows a lost pairing. For Gemini, establish whether the phone really reboots when the assistant starts rather than during a particular app action.
  2. Check the phone and the channel. Confirm the Pixel model in Settings > About phone, then check the current build under System > Software updates. QPR2 Beta 1 is not a normal stable OTA for every Pixel; the device must be eligible and enrolled.
  3. Make the boring preparation. Sync important photos and data, use reliable Wi-Fi, keep sufficient charge, and do not schedule the update before travel, on-call work or important banking authentication. A beta remains pre-release software even when its changelog is tidy.
  4. Install, then test only the affected path. Confirm CP41.260701.005 afterwards, then retry the Bluetooth reconnect, Gemini launch or lock-screen media flow that was failing. One focused test is more informative than opening every app on the phone in a panic.
  5. Gather evidence before a reset. If the issue persists, record the build, accessory or app, event time and reproduction steps, then use the Beta Program feedback route. Factory reset is an extinguisher, not the first button to press.

What changes in practice

The important distinction is between updating for a documented defect and updating on hope. People hit by the exact Bluetooth reconnection fault or Gemini reboots have a concrete reason to consider the beta. Everyone else is usually better served by the stable branch. Google is closing system-level defects ahead of the Feature Drop; that does not oblige anyone to make their primary phone an unpaid test bench.

The no-wipe exit rule is conditional

The easy detail to misread is how to leave the program. If a phone is still on the QPR1 branch, it can opt out and wait for the QPR1 public stable release without a wipe, but only if QPR2 Beta 1 is not installed. Once QPR2 is on the phone, do not opt out reflexively to chase an earlier stable build: downgrading can erase data. Read the warning shown by the program and wait for a stable release in the matching line, or follow Google’s official transition instructions. For the earlier path, AndroidLab’s guide to leaving the Android 17 beta without wiping a Pixel is still relevant.

In brief

  • Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 is build CP41.260701.005 for eligible Pixels in the beta channel.
  • It fixes Bluetooth reconnection, Gemini reboot, lock-screen media and multi-finger touch issues.
  • Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro do not receive QPR2; Pixel 6a and later devices do.
  • The no-wipe exit route applies before QPR2 is installed; do not improvise a downgrade afterwards.
