Use Android as a PC mouse: Unified Remote setup guide

An Android phone can become a PC mouse and trackpad without buying another gadget destined for the drawer. A fresh Android Central guide published on August 3 puts Unified Remote back on the radar: it is not a miracle feature, but it is still a useful way to move a cursor, type a short reply, or control playback from the sofa.

The important detail is architectural. The phone app is only half of the setup: a server on the PC must be installed first, and the Android app reaches it over the local network. That is why setup is usually simple when the network is healthy—and why most failures happen before the app can do anything useful.

Requirements: which computers are supported

Unified Remote lists support for Windows 10 or later, 64-bit only, macOS 10.9 or later on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, and 32-bit or 64-bit desktop Linux. On the phone, install the official app from the Google Play Store.

Before starting, keep the phone and computer on the same local network. The computer may use Ethernet; what matters is that both devices connect through the same router or network segment.

Setup: use Android as a mouse and trackpad

  1. Download and install the PC server from the official Unified Remote download page.
  2. Launch it on the computer and make sure the service remains running.
  3. Install the Android app from Google Play, with both devices already connected to the same network.
  4. In the app, confirm that the server is installed. The computer should then appear through automatic discovery.
  5. Test pointer movement, clicks, and typing before adding extra controls. It is much easier to isolate a network issue at this stage.

If the PC is missing: troubleshoot in the right order

Do not begin with a reset. Unified Remote’s own support guide first recommends removing saved servers in the app and adding them again, because a changed network address can leave an obsolete entry behind. Then update both the mobile app and the PC server, and confirm again that the two devices really share one network.

If discovery still fails, inspect the firewall. Unified Remote documents ports 9512 TCP/UDP and 9511 UDP for automatic discovery, so an overzealous security suite can block the connection. Only after those checks is it worth restarting the PC or reinstalling the app and server.

What changes in practice

The new guide does not change the PC market. It does show why an older Android phone can still have a practical role beside a TV, mini PC, or desk where a physical mouse is not always within reach. The hard limit remains the local network and the server: if either is broken, the app alone cannot bridge the gap.
