Google’s October 29 Google Home release notes fix one of the more unsettling smart speaker quirks: Home and Nest devices that said “Sorry, I didn’t understand” when nobody had spoken. The fix ships with the second October Gemini for Home update, which is listed as Early Access in Google’s notes, and it comes with a long list of app and firmware changes.
What Google fixed in Gemini for Home
The Gemini section of the release notes lists six voice assistant fixes. Besides the phantom reply, Google says it improved how Gemini handles requests to move music between rooms, for example “move Mozart to the living room” or “bring the music here”. It also fixed a rare mix-up between media sleep timers, normal timers and alarms, and made YouTube TV voice commands on smart displays start the right content more reliably.
Two fixes matter for households with several speakers. If you ask to change the volume on a device in another room and Gemini cannot find it, the volume of the speaker you are talking to should no longer change by accident. And alarms or timers that were being set to zero volume will now follow your device volume instead.
App and hardware updates worth knowing
The Google Home app notes add more accurate icons and controls for Matter doors, windows, blinds and garage doors on Android, plus power and cumulative energy readings for compatible Matter plugs and energy monitors. On the camera side, older Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell models get better Wi-Fi reconnection, faster night vision switching on the first-generation Nest Cams, and audio/video sync fixes on the wired first-generation doorbell.
Firmware notes cover Chromecast with Google TV (4K and HD), which moves to the August 2026 Android security patch level, and Nest Wifi and Nest Wifi Pro, with DNS fallback and mesh resilience improvements. Android Authority also highlights fixes for Bluetooth connectivity, Wi-Fi 7 and WPA3 setup, and vanishing speaker groups on Google Home Speaker, Nest Audio and Nest Mini. Google states that some features may take time to reach everyone, even if you already have the latest app version.
What actually changes for you
This is a bug-fix release, not a new feature drop, and that is exactly why it is useful. Nothing here asks you to change settings: the assistant fixes are server-side or app-side and arrive on Google’s schedule. Our read: the phantom “I didn’t understand” fix and the volume and timer fixes are the ones people will notice, because they were small daily annoyances rather than missing features. Google also notes that its release notes are generated with the help of Gemini and may need corrections, so treat the list as a guide, not a guarantee of exact behavior on your hardware.
How to check your setup
- Open the Google Home app and make sure it is updated from Google Play. Google Home is available on the Google Play Store.
- Leave speakers, displays, cameras and routers powered and online so firmware can install.
- Re-test the specific problem you had, such as moving music between rooms or setting a timer, after a day or two.
- If a speaker still misbehaves, follow our Google Home not responding checklist.
In brief
- The October 29 Gemini for Home update fixes unprompted “Sorry, I didn’t understand” replies.
- Room-to-room music moves, sleep timers, cross-room volume and zero-volume alarms are also fixed.
- Matter doors, windows and energy data get better support in the Android app.
- Chromecast with Google TV, Nest Wifi, Nest Wifi Pro and older Nest cameras receive firmware fixes.
- Rollout is gradual, so features may arrive at different times for different users.
