If Android Auto confirms an outgoing call but nothing happens while a flip phone is closed, the microphone or Bluetooth link may not be the real problem. Recent reports describe a narrower compatibility failure involving Android Auto, Gemini and the closed state of some foldable phones.
Android Authority and 9to5Google both traced the issue to user reports involving Motorola Razr models, while Android Authority also found reports from Galaxy Z Flip owners. Motorola and Google are reported to be investigating, but there is no public fix version or release date yet. That distinction matters: this is a reported bug, not proof that every foldable or every Android Auto installation is affected.
What users are reporting
The most specific symptom is easy to miss. Android Auto connects and an outgoing call works when the phone is unfolded. Close the phone, ask Gemini to call the same contact, and Gemini may acknowledge the request without starting the call. Incoming calls can still work.
Do not group every closed-foldable failure under the same label. A separate Android Auto Community report describes the entire wireless connection failing on a Razr 50 after an Android update when the phone is closed. One symptom concerns call initiation; the other concerns the connection itself. The checks below are designed to separate them before you erase pairings or reset the phone.
Confirm the failure while parked
- Park the car and keep it stationary. Do not run this test while driving or handle an unfolded phone on the road.
- Use one known contact. With the phone open, place an outgoing call through Android Auto and note whether it starts normally.
- Repeat with the phone closed. Record whether Android Auto stays connected, whether Gemini confirms the command and whether the dialer actually starts.
- Check an incoming call. If incoming calls work but outgoing calls fail only when the device is closed, your result matches the narrower call-initiation reports more closely.
- Compare wired and wireless modes if your car supports both. This helps distinguish a fold-state call bug from a wireless projection problem.
One clean comparison is more useful than ten random setting changes. Write down the phone model, Android build, Android Auto version, Gemini or Google app version, car or head-unit model, and whether the connection is wired or wireless.
Checks worth trying before a reset
1. Update the whole call path
Update Android Auto from Google Play, the Google app, Gemini if it is installed separately, and the phone’s system software. Also check the car, head unit or wireless adapter for firmware updates. Reboot the phone and infotainment system after the updates, then repeat the same open-versus-closed test.
Avoid APK mirrors and random downgrades. They add a security risk and make a useful bug report harder because the software state is no longer standard.
2. Inspect permissions, but read the evidence
Check that the apps involved in calling have access to Phone, Contacts and Microphone where Android exposes those permissions. If the same call succeeds with the phone open, however, a blanket permission failure is unlikely. The fold state is the stronger clue, so do not grant unrelated permissions in the hope of fixing it.
3. Re-pair only when the connection also fails
If Android Auto disconnects completely when the phone is closed, follow Google’s official Android Auto connection checks, remove the car from the phone and the phone from the car, then pair them again. If Android Auto remains connected and only outgoing calls fail, save re-pairing for later. Wiping a working projection setup is unlikely to fix a call action that changes only with the hinge state.
4. Use the least bad temporary workaround
The reported workaround is to keep the foldable open. If you must do that, open and secure it before moving, using a mount that does not stress the hinge or display. Never unfold or reposition the phone while driving. An older assistant configuration may appear to avoid the bug in historical reports, but it is not a dependable long-term fix as Google moves Android Auto voice actions to Gemini.
For related voice settings that do not involve this call failure, see our Android Auto and Gemini guide.
Send a useful report instead of a vague complaint
Open Android Auto settings on the phone and use Help and feedback or Send feedback if the option is available on your build. Include:
- the exact foldable model and Android build;
- Android Auto, Google app and Gemini versions;
- car, head unit and wireless-adapter models;
- wired or wireless connection;
- open versus closed results for the same contact;
- whether Gemini acknowledged the command;
- whether incoming calls still worked.
This information lets Google and the phone maker see whether the failure sits in Android Auto, Gemini’s call action, the fold-state policy or a manufacturer-specific power and lock-screen rule.
What this really changes
This is more than a cosmetic foldable glitch. Voice calling is supposed to reduce interaction with the phone in the car, while closing a clamshell device is its normal resting state. A workaround that requires an exposed inner screen weakens both promises.
The practical rule is simple: after an Android Auto, Gemini or system update, test one outgoing call while parked with the phone closed. Until a vendor publishes a confirmed fix and build number, treat successful navigation or media playback as separate from successful calling. Do not assume that a connected dashboard means the entire voice-action path is healthy.
In brief
- Some Razr and Galaxy Z Flip users report outgoing Android Auto calls failing only while the phone is closed.
- First determine whether only call initiation fails or the entire wireless connection drops.
- Update Android Auto, Google, Gemini, the phone and the head unit before resetting anything.
- Test open versus closed, wired versus wireless, and incoming versus outgoing calls while parked.
- There is no confirmed public fix version or release date yet.
